Ian attended Workington Grammar School where he developed a love of music and theatre, he played flute in the Cumbria Youth Orchestra. After studying on one of the first Computing Science courses in the country at the University of Coventry, Ian came home to Cumbria where he worked at West Cumberland Farmers, Cumbria County Council and Copeland Borough Council; he subsequently spent 26 years at Iggesund Paperboard Workington Mill as a Senior Project Manager. Ian became their Head of Information Technology, where he worked closely with the Finance Director and other members of the Senior Management Team. During his time at Iggesund, Ian was project lead on a number of large-scale automation projects, sales and marketing projects, financial and business projects in the UK, The Netherlands, Sweden and Taiwan.

Ian’s involvement with the Carnegie started on stage when he was 12 in the lead role of “Oliver” and since that time he has been involved in well over 100 full scale production. Ian has built on his training and experience as a theatre technician and also in set and lighting design. He has worked with WADAMS and WAOS and several other theatre groups throughout the county. Ian also worked with Lakeland Opera, a semi-professional touring group, as Technical Manager for their productions between 1997 and 2009; he had total responsibility for set design, construction and transportation.

Over the last ten years Ian has worked tirelessly, originally as part of the Carnegie Development Group, and subsequently the Carnegie Theatre Trust. The Trust liaised very closely with Allerdale Borough Council to negotiate the handover of the Carnegie Theatre and Arts Centre to the Carnegie Theatre Trust, and this finally took place in May 2015.  Ian has responsibility for the Finances of the Trust and is also responsible for the Technical side of running the theatre.

Ian is an active member of the Rotary Club of Wokington, and was President of the Club in 2017/18. He is currently a member of the Rotary District Executive Team as an Assistant Governor. Ian is retired and is married to Marlene. They have three grown up children, three grand-daughters and two dogs. Marlene will tell you that he does not have any spare time.
